** Note: воскрес (voskres) perfect past tense of “to rise / to resurrect” — from the infinitive form: Воскреснуть (Voskresnut'). This root is found in a couple of other common words in Russian:

– Воскресенье (Voskresen'ye) — Sunday

– Воскрешение (Voskresheniye) — Resurection

I always have been mildly amused how, even during the height of Soviet control, one day in seven still pointed to the Resurrection and the Gospel.  God made sure there were witnesses pointing to Himself.
