The Printing

The Printing is a 1990 movie about the religious persecution in the former Soviet Union.  More about the movie can be found in these following links:

Many have written about the movie, the plot, and the truth of such a representation.  I do not have to.  Instead I want to focus on the music sung within the film.  The hymns that the Russian Baptists sing are authentic, even though they are sung in English—as is all dialogue within the film.

1)  The first hymn sung as they come to an illegal church meeting in the wood:

Не В Словах Молитвенных Речей — Not in Words of Prayer Speeches

Some more information about this hymn provided by a friend (thank you TG!) —

This hymn was first published in 1902 in the Гусли, the first well-known Evangelical Christian hymnbook, which was compiled by Иван Степанович Проханов (Ivan Stepanovich Prokhanov). The author is unknown. The composer was Ф. Икскуль, which is obviously a German surname. After a bit of research, I couldn't find anything about him specifically, but the Uexküll family was Baltic German nobility in what is now Estonia and Latvia, within the Russian Empire. Baltic Germans were mostly German-speaking Lutherans, and it's possible that the hymn originated there. Alternately, in the beginning of the Baptist movement in Petersburg around the end of the 19th century, many of the aristocracy became believers, and it's possible that this Uexküll was among them.

This hymn has been translated into English and some congregations employ it in their services.  As is in typical Russian fashion, lines 3 and 4 of each verse are repeated.  All 7 English verses are found here along with audio files of the music being sung and played.  Quite lovely recordings.

All I Ever Need is Found in Thee

Here is a youtube of the Russian words being sung and shown:

And a link to the hymn music.

Another Russian version of this hymn
(Note different chords and a slightly different melody.)

2 The second  hymn is sung at the same illegal service when they begin the communion service:

Начальник Жизни — Lead Me to Calvary

Here is a pdf of the Russian and the English words as projected together.

And a link to the hymn music with the Russian words.

And finally a youtube of a Russian congregation singing this hymn in Russian.

Additionally, a Russian group from the Portland / Vancouver area singing this song:

        "Не В Словах Молитвенных Речей"
              In a word-for-word translation

Ne v slovakh molitvennykh rechey
Not in words [of] prayer speeches

I ne v pesnyakh zhizn' dushi moyey.
And not in songs [is] life [of] soul mine.

Vsya ona sokryta vo Khriste:
All it hidden in Christ:

Все мои источники в Тебе!
Vse moi istochniki v Tebe!
All my springs (sources) [are] in You!

Ne v zhelan'yakh ya ishchu pokoy
Not in desires I seek peace

I ne v schast'ye, dannom mne Toboy.
And not in happiness given [to] me [by] You.

Pesn' odna vsegda zvuchit vo mne:
Song one always sounds in me:
(Ie, One song always sounds in me)

Vse moi istochniki v Tebe!
All my springs (sources) [are] in You!

Vidish' Ty zabot moikh volnu
See You waves [of] my worry

I dayesh' mne v serdtse tishinu.
And give me in heart stillness.

Vse zhelan'ya prinoshu Tebe:
All desires [I] bring [to] You:

Все мои источники в Тебе!
Vse moi istochniki v Tebe!
All my springs (sources) [are] in You!

Ty yavil Sebya, lyubov' Svoyu,-
You revealed Yourself, Your own love,—

Budet li otradneye v rayu?
Will it be more pleasant in paradise?

Radost'yu trepeshchet vse vo mne:
[With] joy trembles all in me:

Все мои источники в Тебе!
Vse moi istochniki v Tebe!
All my springs (sources) [are] in You!

Razve mne ot znoya Ty ne sen'?
Surely [to] me from heat [are] You not shade?

Spryachus' ya v Tebe v palyashchiy den'.
Will hide I in You in scorching day.

Vospoyu v pustyne ya Tebe:
Sing (glorify) in [the] desert I [to] You:

Все мои источники в Тебе!
Vse moi istochniki v Tebe!
All my springs (sources) [are] in You!

Sila vrazh'ya mne krugom grozit,
Power enemy me around threatens,

No dushe Gospodne imya - shchit.
But [to] soul Lord's name — [is a] shield.

Polnuyu pobedu dal Ty mne:
Full victory gave You [to] me:

Все мои источники в Тебе!
Vse moi istochniki v Tebe!
All my springs (sources) [are] in You!

Ty - moya opora i pokoy,
You — [are] my support and peace,

Krepost' i pokrov, Spasitel' moy!
Stronghold and cover, Savior mine!

Vechnoye blazhenstvo dal Ty mne:
Eternal blessedness gave You [to] me:

Все мои источники в Тебе!
Vse moi istochniki v Tebe!
All my springs (sources) [are] in You!
