Our soldiers the guardians played songs on accordions
The Russian Waltz's cheery glad sound.

   Vienna remembers, and the Danube, and the Alps,
   All the springing and the singing that bright May.
   Heads were whirling with the twirling Russian Waltz.
   Hearts remember, never forget that fine day!


2. This soldier's fine waltz then sounded

* тоска....
тоска isn't really weariness, it's closer to sadness, but it doesn't really have an English equivalent. Kind of sadness mixed with weariness of soul and despondency with a bit of depression and boredom thrown in for good measure. One popular definition is "the feeling of a person who desires something, but doesn't know exactly what, but knows that the desired thing is unachievable". Why hasn't anyone moved the mountain yet? I have asked myself this question more than once... Maybe the problem is in need? I think this is the key point. How many problems can arise if all our whims are fulfilled...? But for real needs, the Lord will certainly give what is asked for. The main thing:
   1. do not doubt the Lord,
   2. believe that He heard us,
   3. Rejoice (do not be discouraged),
   4. Keep your heart clean (from anger, resentment, envy, and pride)
   5. The Lord will send answers to our prayers. (These are His promises)

"Jesus answered them, 'Have faith in God! I tell you the truth: if someone says to this mountain, 'Get up and throw yourself into the sea!' and does not doubt his soul, but believes that what he said will happen, then so it will be for him. Therefore I say to you, whatever you pray for or ask for, believe that you have already received it – and it will be done for you. And when you pray, forgive all those you have offended, so that your Heavenly Father will also forgive you for your transgressions."

The Printing

 The Printing is a 1990 movie about the religious persecution in the former Soviet Union.  More about the movie can be found in these following links:

Many have written about the movie, the plot, and the truth of such a representation.  I do not have to.  Instead I want to focus on the music sung within the film.  The hymns that the Russian Baptists sing are authentic, even though they are sung in English—as is all dialogue within the film.

1)  The first hymn sung as they come to an illegal church meeting in the wood:

         Не В Словах Молитвенных Речей — Not in Words of Prayer Speeches

Some more information about this hymn provided by a friend (thank you TG!) — 

This hymn was first published in 1902 in the Гусли, the first well-known Evangelical Christian hymnbook, which was compiled by Иван Степанович Проханов (Ivan Stepanovich Prokhanov). The author is unknown. The composer was Ф. Икскуль, which is obviously a German surname. After a bit of research, I couldn't find anything about him specifically, but the Uexküll family was Baltic German nobility in what is now Estonia and Latvia, within the Russian Empire. Baltic Germans were mostly German-speaking Lutherans, and it's possible that the hymn originated there. Alternately, in the beginning of the Baptist movement in Petersburg around the end of the 19th century, many of the aristocracy became believers, and it's possible that this Uexküll was among them.

 This hymn has been translated into English and some congregations employ it in their services.  As is in typical Russian fashion, lines 3 and 4 of each verse are repeated.  All 7 English verses are found here along with audio files of the music being sung and played.  Quite lovely recordings.
