Autumn Comes Upon the Edge of Night

There! Autumn comes upon the edge of night
   With unfurled clouds and hues and sinking sun,
   He broadcasts Summertime's impending flight
   To fairer lands of promised bliss begun.
   But Autumn knows she is the fickle one:
   Her days once started happy, bright, and strong,
   Grew wearisome and dull and overdone.
   Thus Autumn comes to cool the sun-parched throng,
Enliv'ning hearts with crisp and wisp and hue-forged song.

The Sentinel

Artwork by Alterworld Art, Christopher Story

As darkness closes in, don't fear the night!
   The cold and vicious claws of doubt and dread
   Shall not touch you nor spread their wasting blight.
   For there above you and around your head
   With shimmering wing and power round you spread,
   Though hardly seen nor touched—intangible!
   Your night is safe, he guards you on your bed.
   This angel on your watch—dependable!
God gives him charge to guard: your heav'nly sentinel.

Two Worlds Converge

"Two Worlds Converge" by Alterworld Art & Lousiana Dreams' Photography

There is an old, worn gate where worlds converge,
   The beck'ning portal pulls and bids me come;
   Ethereal grays of bracken ferns now surge
   With heathered hills and Spanish moss then strum
   A chord with cataract in joyous thrum—
   And everywhere the light!  The colors, hues,
   And sights!  Now raise my heart to joy from glum!
   And I am torn between the world I knew
And world of promise where my heart through portal flew!

O! Here there is a spacious, gracious gaze
   That looks upon the land with loving eye,
   That breathes a breath of peace o'er all its days,
   That raises wounded spirits high to fly,
   And drives away each doubt, each fearful sigh.
   O, see that now this portal calls to you,
   That bids you enter from the wasteland dry!
   So be not torn between the world you knew
And world of promise when our hearts through portal flew!

An Altered World

Photo by Christopher Story

The hallowed halls, the sacred rooms,
  the special compass of the consecrated sweep of time.
The fetch, the stretch, the etch of bloom,
   the flourishing of life midst light and grime.

The hallowed halls, the walls, the stalls, then falls
   the ancient passage and the room once decked with gold;
Now spirit filled and crumbled round
   the old time visage whispers bold
         and cold with hold and life tenfold;
    Oh, have you told!
          this imagery of life untold.

The wispy light, the wavery forms,
   The spirited shadows of a time before;
The wavery light and transforming clouds:
    But light before the transformed light that warms.

That warms and roasts, and suns and toasts;
    That drives the life unto its morrow;
This life shall now, with meaning plow,
    Ignore the sadness upon its sorrow.

And all gathered then shall pause,
   shall cause with all its laws and grand applause,
       induce a breathing space, a time with life adorned with grace—
A pensive moment on our brief amplitude;
    a timeless moment of a fortitude
        a moment within a special place.

An altered world `tween life and light,
    dash and flash, breath and death,
An echo here and now of that which was
    and that which might yet come to be.
And here I pause to view and think,
    with hush and rest, ken and zest,
Knowing that the moment here is gold
    and tomorrow's no guarantee.
